Shane Mulligan, PhD, founded South Line Editing after several years as a freelance editor. Initially he worked mostly with technicians and experts on finance and renewable energy to refine training materials, web content, and a range of technical documents and submissions. His work has helped ensure the success and compliance of numerous renewable energy projects, and contributed to teaching a new generation of renewable energy and finance professionals. As head of South Line Editing, he does most of the work, but hires outside help when needed to ensure a project gets the attention and skills it deserves.
Shane was at his family home on the South Line near Kincardine, Ontario, when talk turned to how he might combine his expertise in line editing with his experience in academic research and publishing to help scholars achieve their publishing and funding goals.
Shane earned his PhD from Cambridge University in international politics and philosophy, and spent many years researching and teaching on the environment and global politics. His research focused on energy futures, food, biotechnology, and biodiversity. He has a strong interest in botany, ecology, invasive species, and evolution, and has spent many years studying the human predicament of trying to live according to Earth’s limits. He has published over a dozen academic journal articles and chapters in edited volumes, and was awarded funding from SSHRC for both his doctoral and postdoctoral research.
Shane has been involved in several editing organizations, including Editors Canada, the Editorial Freelancers Association, and the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, where he has achieved Intermediate Member standing.
Shane volunteers with local environmental groups and enjoys spending time outdoors with his friends, especially Tulo and Haemish.

“It is always a pleasure working with Dr. Mulligan, who is known for his deep research skills and writing prowess. We’ve worked together in several capacities, including textbooks and research papers. Shane combines sharp critical thinking with an eye for detail and a highly readable writing style to produce top-quality work. He is also an excellent editor and proof-reader. Above all, he cares deeply about the issues that animate many of us: paths toward sustainability, the promotion of human rights, and the rights of nature. It is always a pleasure working with Dr. Mulligan, who is known for his deep research skills and writing prowess. “I worked with Shane on a book project and he is a strong contributor and great team player. Shane’s work is detailed, well researched and he manages to find the right balance between information and passion when writing about environmental issues. Look forward to collaborating on future projects!”

“Shane has worked for RENAC on a number of online (eLearning) courses over the past two years. Communication is always pleasant and friendly, and his work is always thorough. His capacity for judgment and appropriate interpretation exceeded our expectations, and he voluntarily did more than defined by contract in order to enhance the quality of the final product. We are grateful to be able to continue working with him.”
Charlene Rossler, Project Manager, Renewables Academy (RENAC)
